The Right Combination of Love, Luck and Beer

This morning, like every Saturday morning, Running Buddy Selena and I met up at 6am to run. We have been running buddies for over a year and a half now, first meeting during training for the 2008 San Francisco Marathon through the National AIDS Marathon Training Program. We ran as a team in Griffith Park here in L.A. on Saturdays, and following the completion of the program a year ago, Running Buddy Selena and I decided to keep it up and train for another on our own. And then another. And then yet another. And now, this October, we will run 26.2 miles together in the Nike Women's Marathon.
I don't want you to get the wrong idea. It would be presumptuous to assume we weigh 110 lbs and take ourselves seriously. We are there to have a good time. We say hello to other runners. We laugh, we have fun. And we have days, like most people in the world, where we really hate it. It's too hot, or it's too humid, or we are sick, or tired, or we screwed up our routine and woke up on the wrong side of the bed or we had one too many glasses of Merlot the night before. Sometimes, you can have the best intentions in the whole wide world, and it just doesn't work out. We have had days where we literally meet in our usual parking garage, and just stare at one another through our car windows, giving a look that says, "This is not going to be a good running day." And then we won't run. We walk, or just go get coffee and catch up. It's the best. And luckily, we're not out there to win. We're out there to finish what we started.
Today however, was, as far as I'm concerned, one of our best runs together to date. I am currently examining all possible contributors to the success that enabled us to have bouncy ponytails for 14 straight miles, smiling all the while. I'm making like a forensic scientist and examining all factors that may, or may not have contributed to today's success.
Here's the run down of the last 24-hours.
6:30pm, last night: Arrived home from work, ate a Lean Cuisine Fettuccine Alfredo for dinner (for both of us, actually, Running Buddy Selena ate the same thing, completely a coincidence) with mixed frozen vegetables, and about a 1/2 C. of mixed olives still in the fridge from last week's girl's night.
6:45pm: Turned on the TV, watched one episode of TMZ, one episode of Weeds, and two episodes of Samantha Who? All on Tivo.
7:00pm: Ate two Tofutti Cuties Ice Cream Sandwiches. Yes, two.
7:30pm: Chased two Tylenol PM with a very large glass of Merlot. (I've been having trouble sleeping, thank-you-very-much, I was in no way channeling Valley of the Dolls, and no, normally I do not condone the mixing of pills and booze.)
7:45pm: Take picture of self drinking Merlot.
8:45pm: Check e-mail, put on PJ's, clean kitchen.
9:15pm: 1st attempt at sleep, FAIL.
9:30pm: Read Star magazine, contemplate whether or not Scarlett Johansson looks better as a blonde or as a redhead.
9:45pm: 2nd attempt at sleep, FAIL.
10:00pm: Turn on TV in bedroom, watch one full episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent.
11:00 pm: 3rd attempt at sleep, SUCCESS!
5:00am: Alarm goes off, Snooze.
5:05am: Alarm goes off, Snooze.
5:10am: Alarm goes off, get out of bed, prepare running essentials. Put on favorite Lucy Power Pants, Lucy Sports Bra, Target dry-fit running tank.
5:20am: Eat Kashi Go Lean Cereal with Organic Skim Milk, 1/2 C. Blueberries, 1 Banana and 1 Tbs. of Peanut Butter.
5:30am: Fill up water bottles, one with H20, the other with new Clif Limeade (which Running Buddy Selena thought tasted like "a diet margarita!" I thought it was delicious, and will definitely buy again, as it's not syrupy or very sweet like some other electrolyte drinks can be.)
6:00am: Get stuck in traffic, it is L.A.!
6:15am: Meet up with Running Buddy Selena, walk towards the Santa Monica Pier, realize it's so early the lights are still on the ferris wheel. It's cool, cloudy and mild out. Perfect running weather.
7:30am: Stop at Starbucks shortly after mile 5, order 2 Grande Black Iced Teas, chug them along with Honey Stinger energy gel. Realize Honey Stinger energy gel is yet another energy product Running Buddy Selena likes! High-five one another upon this discovery.
9:30am: Finish run, get ourselves to the bar, and order Bud Lights, mine over ice with a straw, hers plain, both of ours with limes.
Noon: Congratulate ourselves upon a job well done!

Okay, so looking back, I guess it could have been the weather, the snacks, the iced tea, the thought of beer at the end, who really knows. I think its the right combo of love, luck and beer. All I know is that at the end of the day, I'm super-duper thankful for such an amazing friend, and it was yet another perfect Saturday in L.A.

  1. WOW... I am going to have to say your day looks AMAZING! Ahhh I wish I would have gone for a run and then had beer to "wash it down" LOL! And... I just don't think there is anything wrong w/ beer @ 1030 am... haven't you ever heard the saying "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" =)

  2. Congrats on the LR!!! The best feeling is when one goes off without a hitch! I had a great long run too! Blog to come... just been too busy chillaxing! :)

    I did two margarita shot bloks before the run and all was well so perhaps I'm def going to blow through the rest! Thanks for plugging them!

  3. That's incredible that you will run 26.6 miles. Sounds like you are really into your running routine, great inspiration for the rest of us couch potatoes.

  4. You make me miss my running partner. :(
    We trained for our first marathon together, which was totally random, and we had more fun than I think we expected.
    She's probably the only girl I'd get up at 4:30 in the morning for.
