I may not exactly be Betty Bargain, (I recently spent $24.00 on 6 lollipops, after all, more on that later), but I do love a good comparison shop that yields a budget-friendly result. Being in the fashion industry, I am often privy to sample sales, and a while back, I had heard about a James Perse sample sale where on the roster of available items would be their delectable cotton jersey sheets. I love James Perse. I think his cotton shirts are classic and well-fitting, so you can see how excited I was about this sale. Unfortunately, the sheets were the first to go, but I set out on a mission to buy them for The Boyfriend for his birthday anyway. That is, until I found out that the complete set of James Perse Cotton Sheets, at regular price, would set me back over $750.00. I'm not saying The Boyfriend isn't worth it, but God knows if I had an extra $750.00 to spend, I would put it towards, oh I don't know, an SLR-camera, a nice new handbag, my monthly student loans, so many other things. But I was still on a mission, and to be quite frank, HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE ME ON A MISSION!
Luckily, a good friend of mine was getting married, and a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond was in order. I went in looking for the knife set that was on her registry, and came out with not only the knives, but the best set of sheets The Boyfriend has ever slept on, for the bargain price of less than $80.00, for the complete sheet set and an extra set of pillowcases! Pure Beech Jersey Knit Sheets are like sleeping in your favorite, oldest, softest T-shirt.
Now, I know a thing-or-two about fabric. I don't have a $100,000.00 design school education for nothing. And I know that 100% Cotton is made from the same stuff as those cotton swabs you clean your ears with every morning. On the other hand, Modal is a bio-based textile processed from reconstituted cellulose that originated in the beech tree. In a nutshell, it's super-duper soft and yummy and natural, all at the same time. These days, you'd be hard-pressed to find a women's contemporary brand that doesn't use Modal in at least part of their collection. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE COTTON, I'm just saying the difference between $750.00 cotton sheets, and any other cotton sheets, is virtually nil.
So let me think about this for a minute. 100% Cotton Sheets that cost $750.00 and look like this:
Or 70% Modal, 30% Cotton Sheets that cost $80.00 and look like this:My educated opinion is that I made a very good choice. So sorry, James, I still love you, but until that next Sample Sale, the Pure Beech Sheets win, hands down.
